House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) approached Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the floor Tuesday evening to see if she would attach her name to the most recent version of a joint resolution supporting Israel in its battle with two militant Islamic groups. It's a miracle, really, that she would even ask. It does suggest some concern that elements of the base may be a little uncomfortable -- at long last -- about Israel's Guernica tactics. Nan would like to have something to tell these folks, so they'll go back into their zombie-like daze and pull the right lever in November.... Pelosi... wanted Republicans to include language asking the two sides to limit civilian casualties.
Boehner... told the minority leader he would bring the resolution to the floor with or without her support.
Pelosi then told him that she would back the measure, and even make a floor statement supporting it....
Of course, when she didn't get anything to tell them, she just shrugged her shoulders and said, in essence, Oh well, fuck 'em. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

There's something unseemly, beyond the sheer depravity of endorsing collective punishment, about her reluctance to demand some kind of quid pro quo. I know there's a buyer's market for souls where she and her chums peddle themselves, but this isn't even a business transaction. Her career isn't going to benefit at all. As soon as someone more willing to extend loans -- that will be written off -- and steer arms deals through, she's toast.
Israel's political class is busily ruining the country's utility as as vital piece in the wackjob "great game" the rich countries play in the Middle East. As allies, they're worse than enemies. They can't stop creating captive populations and thrusting the support for them on their nominal friends. They're incapable of NOT escalating. Even a mobster knows better than to let a flunky get out of control.
It's these kinds of anti-rational actions, strraight to the point of rejecting amoral pragamtism, that convinced me the Democrats were completely hopeless. I never expected them to have any moral sense. They lack even a thug's sense of long term self-interest. Utterly incapable of learning. There's no sorrier spectacle than the continually punked wannabe who tries to ape the bullies who tell him what to do. Well, maybe one: the people who place their hopes in the fortitude of the bootlicker.

An interesting event going on in Jerusalem commemorating an act of "resistance". In the Looking Glass World of these Mad Hatters, words are turning "curiouser and curiouser":
'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean--neither more nor less.'
'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'
'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master--that's all.'

Re: Scruggs as Debs
My ambitions are considerably less noble. All I've ever wanted is to be a think tank scholar.
