Pious hope (and no change)

By Michael J. Smith on Thursday June 4, 2009 05:42 PM

Here's Obie, laying down the law to a group of benighted towelheads:

Palestinians must abandon violence. Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the centre of America's founding.
As I often ask: Where do you start with this stuff -- this emetic concoction of falsehood, sanctimony, and hypocrisy?

"Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and does not succeed." Really? What were Stalingrad and Omaha Beach about? Gettysburg? Bunker Hill? The storming of the Bastille? Horatio at the bridge? Thermopylae?

Needless to say, Obie forgot to send the Israelis the same message.

The whole sick-making performance is like this -- Parson Obama, master of the drone aircraft and the cluster bomb for six days in the week, ascends the pulpit on the seventh and tells everybody -- well, almost everybody -- to renounce violence.

On Obie's one hand, the Israelis. On his other, the Palestinians. Obie weighs, Obie judges, Obie sits on the throne and apportions the deservedness and destiny of nations. So let it be written! So let it be done!

There would be a certain Cecil B DeMille grandeur in it if he could assume a Pharaonic manner, but the closest he can get is Pharisaical -- the I-mean-business furrowed brow, the moralizing scowl, the hollow sepulchral voice of a Methodist parson with a secret vice.

The qualities that his admirers admired him for -- intelligence, moral seriousness, high purpose, the whole Eagle Scout package -- curdle, it seems, once mixed with actual power, into a filthy foetid smarmy preacherly pustular effluvium worthy of Woodrow Wilson himself.

As Galilee's most illustrious son once observed:

For ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

The wilsom parallel
Is instructive
And deadly

More a woody or a jimmy
Then a jack or harry

Well said. I was waiting for the part where he calls on Israel to embrace non-violence, but the teleprompter must have skipped a paragraph or two.

Ah well, you know Saint Obama of the Smart Bomb feels that way at heart...just look at those puppydog eyes!

Yeah. We're onto something here. Obie is the first president in my lifetime to have that holy-Joe Pwogwessive right-thinking schtick sewn up. As far as I can tell, Wilson was the last such.

What wonderful things Obie may give us -- mustard gas and then Seventeen multiculturally-sensitive Points, up by three from Wilson's.

Was it Clemenceau who said, a propos of Wilson's, that "le bon Dieu meme n'avait que dix"?

well obie's probably the first one since wilson to have served a stint in the ivory tower before assuming the helm of american empire - no doctorate though, which probably explains why he's a poor understudy of wilson...

Called folks like woody and barry
America's genteeeeel tradtion

There are updates

Cross Cultural understanding has taken to a looser
Set of process guidelines
Feeling the other sides pain of course
But others uplift remains task ultimo

And open doors
Every where we need to "mission to"
must exist or be made
Or we'll make
The necessary open doors ourselves

Victims of the others otherness
Require rescue. As always
but genteeeelers are more patient then
Their teddy bear
Bush rat cousins
And more method sensitive

Yeah, I've been looking at the Oba Fish's Wilsonian characteristics for awhile now. And he was in rare form this week. A positively blood curdling speech in its stentorian glory.

My work cohort insisted on listening to Oba's drivel during lunch hour yesterday. I'm wondering if I can grieve that with the union.

Some future Thucydides will have fun describing the different oratorical styles of Obama, Bush and Clinton, but meanwhile, can't we get to the substance of the issue, the reasons why they all add up to the same thing? Or maybe the issue -- the "balance of forces" is changing?

Michael Hureaux:

Actually, I think it's fun looking back at the rhetorical styles of different imperial epochs and noting the similarities in the styles of the players. As long as frustrated artists insist on being so lethal, they may as well get critical review if their chops are redundant. It's not that the ruling class putzes are phonys, that's part of the gig. It's just that they're not even original phonys.

Don't worry, MH, Saint ZerO will probably close down your "failing" school soon.

Six thousands words, that's how long I heard that goddamn' speech was. Six thousand goddamn' words. Jayzus, BO, have a little mercy, man.

Along with us Yanks, the Arabs now know -- after hearing one of BO's speeches -- what a stack of pancakes feels like when they pour on the Aunt Jemima.

Good thing I leaped out of bed, dressed and hauled ass out of the room upon waking to the live telecast of that steaming heap of empty fluff, or else I'd be paying to have another new Smarmometerâ„¢ installed over here, as from all accounts, the SQ (Smarm Quotient) of the most recent speech was -- as they say over at NASA -- "offscale high".

After over a year of listening to BO run his pompous, empty mouth, all I can say is give me back George W. Bush. I'd rather have a stupid President any goddamn' day of the week. At least Bush's speeches were entertaining.

"The siege of Vienna? The battle of Manzikert"

Linda J:

Thank you all. Unfortunately, there's not enough astringent in the world to heal the gash of Obama's mouth.
