Crackpot Stakhanovites...

By Michael J. Smith on Friday December 8, 2006 08:39 PM

... was the learned tag that the esteemed J Alva Scruggs gave to this snippet:

Congress faces longer hours

WASHINGTON -- Forget the minimum wage. Or outsourcing jobs overseas. The labor issue most on the minds of members of Congress is their own: They will have to work five days a week starting in January.

The horror.

I have to admit that a more homespun reference came to my mind -- was it Mark Twain who said that "No man’s life or liberty are safe while the Legislature is in session”? And now it's going to be five days a week instead of three -- Oh Jayzus, shure we're doomed altogether.

J. Alva Scruggs:

Those of us who have spent time in corporate servitude recognize that awful management shake-up language. It means a bigshot has been reading those neo-taylorist happy joy-joy manuals again. It translates to increasing busyness at the expense of productivity and seeing just much annoyance can be cultivated in an effort at "incentivization".

I don't see a need for any more than two or three pieces of legislation a year, frankly. Most functions of government are handled by the civil service. A little oversight is all that needs. The rest of the time should be spent in home districts, preferably in community meetings, in volunteer work and in seeking constituent feedback person to person.

Definately a troubling development. If only we could start a campaign to give our representatives a 2 day work week, we could put them in giant hamster wheels for the other three. Attached to generators, they could produce subsidized electricty for the poor and thus once again become productive members of society.

Or is that asking too much?

Note also that comments with three or more links may be held for "moderation" -- a strange term to apply to the ghost in this blog's machine. Seems to be a hard-coded limitation of the blog software, unfortunately.
