Light unto the Nations strikes again -- or not

By Michael J. Smith on Saturday June 5, 2010 11:38 PM

It appears that the crew of the Rachel Corrie didn't suffer the same level of Israeli barbarism that the folks on the Mavi Marmara did.

I'm glad for the Corries. It took, you should pardon the expression, balls, to sail that boat toward Gaza after what happened last weekend. Those people deserve a lot of respect.

Why wasn't it a replay? Speculation is rife, as they say. Perhaps Irish people are official white people, whereas Turks are mere Levantines -- the very kind of people Israel was created to crush under its hobnailed heel?

Perhaps. But I wonder whether the answer is even more interesting than that.

Perhaps Israel now finds itself in the awkward position of being a state that can't massacre, and can't not massacre.

Massacre has always been an important tool in the Zionist kit -- an indispensable one, in fact. The Zionist message has always been that resistance is not only futile but suicidal. (Maybe this is why suicide has become an important element of the resistance.) "We can kill you, and get away with it" -- those really ought to be the lyrics of Israel's national anthem.

The body-armored goons dropping from their choppers onto the Mavi's deck, shooting people in the head, and then bewailing their own victimhood -- no doubt they expected that to work. It has in the past, from Deir Yassein through Sabra and Shatila. If it were to stop working -- where would they be?

For whatever reason -- because the Turks are honorary Europeans now, or because we've collectively gotten wise to the Israel scam -- it seems to have stopped working, for a suddenly significant number of people. So did they have to pull back and act like a halfway civilized society in dealing with the Rachel?

If that's what's happened, it's heading into the endgame for the awful little apartheid state on the Med. Once they have to pretend to be civilized, it's all over but the screaming. Pretense seeps in, through skin and sinew into the bone -- and before you know it, you are civilized.

I don't think its racial. They killed Rachel Corrie herself, a blond, American WASP. They killed James Miller and Tom Hurndal, both British. They shot Emily Henochowicz in the face. Guessing by her name, I'd imagine she's Jewish.

And in every case, Israel's propagandists decided to smear the person they killed. There's currently some cognitive infiltration going on by Israel's paid bloggers across the Indymedia sites. The line seems to be that because she was a Cooper Union student she deserved to get shot in the face.

In other words, putting out an art students eye is just fine by them.

If I wrote a fictional villain who put out a young art students eye and laughed about how she deserved it, I'd be accused of laying it on too thick.

I made the error of posting links, and lost them to moderation.

Read Magnes Zionist's "George W. Obama..." and Mondoweiss' "Death to Jews" articles for a view of the Israeli population and state which suggests it'll only get worse.

Overheard in Tel Aviv, according to Neve Gordon? "Heil Lieberman!"

I read some creep wrote on her blog, "nothing like getting hit in the head with a tear gas canister, huh? LOL."

You wouldn't be laying it on too thick.

I believe the Israelis singled out the Turkish ship to make an example of as it would be easier to make the case they were the victims of violent, suicidal Muslim jihadis. Since we're all conditioned to hate Muslims, it was the logical choice.

As for expecting them to act civilized anytime soon, I wouldn't hold my breath. How they can restrain the urge to piss on Joe "shoot me on sight" Biden is a mystery.

op:

you flame throwers fail to see the greater threat imbedded in mjs's notion of simulated civilized behaviour
"pretense seeping in thru the skin " and all

he gives the zionics more pause then your bluster about only can get worse

if indeed they can't any longer just massacre but then
now again they must still massacre

bravo mjs for seeing the crack of light on the horizon
its been a long long nite and its not yet over ...but

remember the boers !!!!

senecal:

I see this "civilized" reprise as just window-dressing, or misdirection. Would you feel safer now, landing in Gaza with a boatload of food and medecine?

Israel is expert at psychological manipulation; they invented the "madman" theory. The point is to keep you off-guard. You may have grown up with an alcoholic parent -- they're like that too.

Beware a kinder-gentler Israel, moving once again, with Western blessing, toward the "two-state" solution.

MJS:

"Beware of Israel" is in any case always good advice.

Senecal,

As you imply, the "two state solution" is a pretext for a war of extermination. Arafat was always smart enough to avoid declaring a State. The moment he did, Rabin, Peres, Barak, Bibi or Sharon would have moved to hot war.

OP,

I posted those links to show that the internal dynamics may preclude the maskirovka of a "softer, gentler" Israel.

Lieberman's cache is growing.

Respect,

Jack

hist:

I'm fairly sure the mainstream in Israel is in favor of annexing the West Bank and Gaza, and, instead of giving the Palestinians the vote, ethnically cleansing them.

But the question is, would they get away with it?

What was the last successful major ethnic cleansing operation within the European world?

There may have been some ethnic cleansing in Yugoslavia but Yugoslavia was broken up so it can hardly be considered a success.

Saddam engaged in a certain amount of ethnic cleansing. But Iraq was also broken up so that couldn't be considerd successful either

I'd guess the last time ethnic cleansing worked in Europe was just after the Second World War, when Germans were expelled from most of Eastern Europe. Germany and Poland are never going to come to blows over East Prussia, not even in the post Cold War world.

Could Israel succeed. I'd have to say "yes" and I also think they're probably going to make an attempt at some time in the near future.

We can assume that Israel would have at least the tacit assent of the United States if it decided to expell the Palestinians, that Obama would drape America's nuclear umbrella over whatever Israeli government decides to "pull the trigger" and prevent a coordinated attack from the surounding Arab states. And we can also assume that any kind of outrage in Europe and the resulting boycotts will fade over time. The United States and maybe even Russia will make up some of the economic slack caused by a European boycott.

The only thing really holding Israel back is probably the apolitical, hedonistic side of their population. Most Israelis would probably like to expell the Palestinians but I doubt they'd want to do the work or take the casualties.

hist:

And just a note on Rachel Corrie herself. She may have been young and fairly naive. Most people are in their early 20s. I was an idiot when I was 23.

But having read her e-mails and journals, she pretty accuately grasped the central political conflict of our age.

The reason Americans support torture, support the Israelis, support the wall on the Mexican border, support SB 1070, support robbing the Arabs of their oil is pretty simple.

We're a country with an industrial base, and yet richer than most of the world. Even the poorest American tends to have it pretty good compared to anybody in the third world. If not for the American military, the Chinese would have long since called our loans in and we would have long ago become just like the Greeks.

The "north" will continue to rob the "south," the rich the poor, America and Europe the third world. You can be a liberal Democrat but if you want to continue to live as an American, you will at least look the other way when the American military rolls into another country and flattens it.

The only real way you can live a moral life these days if you're an American is to go down, live with the poor, and join their struggle. You'll probably get killed. If you live you'll probably get called a terrorist.

But is it better to live until you're 80 sucking in the world's life blood through tubes, or is it better to die at 23 standing up to the machine? Within the span of the life of the universe, those 57 years aren't very much.

How old are you now, hist? You write from the pov of a romantic idealist. Please don't do that if you are not walking the talk.

Corrie gave her all for a hovel in Gaza. She proved that being an American is no protection from the IDF. Similar proofs occurred in Nicaragua and El Salvador in the 1980's where other US catspaws were in charge of the imperial project.

This latest atrocity in the Med is the new answer to the 'safety in numbers' move originated by Witness for Peace in Central America in the 80's. Even 700 hundred aren't enough now. Maybe if there were 700 bona fide A-S Americans or 700 American Jews it would make a difference. But they'd probably be sniffed out by NSA.CIA.FBI and prevented from getting to the embarkation point.

The Turkish led effort has at least forced the Turkish government to take a stand rhetorically on behalf of its civil society ... always an awkward proposition for a NATO member state.

"We all know our duty better than we discharge it."

John Randolph, early American politician, wit, and duelist.

Boink:

Got it! hist is Ken Burns!

hist:

Ken Burns aside (I prefer Shelby Foote) I don't think what I said is wrong.

Americans suck down many times the resources we produce. We're Klingons, relying on our enormous military to strongarm the rest of the world into funding our addictions. Israelis are just a kind of ruder, more openly racist version of ourselves.

Even the most liberal American "supports the troops" because he knows, deep down inside, he's a vampire.

Rachel Corrie made the choice not to be a vampire, to go down and live with the victims. That's the central political conflict of our time. Are you with the vampires? Or are you with their victims?

This is standard progress in something we haven't witnessed here in the old USA since the mid 1980s -- the success of a militant non-violent assault on a criminal polity.

Let's hope it catches fire big-time. The hour is certainly at hand.

Personally, I'd sign up to sail in, if it reaches the scale where somebody figures out how to make it doable for us working comrades. Let's flood those fuckers.

Sean:

While leftist knees are jerking over Klinghoffer the way they've been conditioned to, here's Israel demonstrating its funny bone and new found sense of civilization:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDQ1O7tBEV8&feature=player_embedded#!

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev, unabashed by the tidal wave of world condemnation, also brushed aside criticism over the video link, saying he actually thought it was "funny."

"I called my kids in to watch it because I thought it was funny," he said, adding that he first noticed the video on the New York Times website.

"It is what Israelis feel … The GPO distributes non-government items, things that we think that show our side of the story," Regev said.

Refraining from massacre: it's the new civility.

How about setting up a fund where Americans could "sponsor" a Greek, Italian or Turkish citizen to go on this kind of relief mission?

Americans who can afford the airfare and the time off can always go themselves.

But the rest of us can donate 25, 50, 100 bucks to help fund future expaditions.

MJS:
Could Israel succeed [in expelling the Palestinians]. I'd have to say "yes" and I also think they're probably going to make an attempt at some time in the near future.
Agreed, it's hard to see what would stop them. On the other hand, it's hard to see what's been stopping them up to now. Apparently something has, though, hasn't it?
senecal:

What's stopping them? The old story-line still works, I believe. They are there because we want them there, for our purposes. We'll play their tune, but at our tempo. We don't give a shit about the Palestinians, anymore than the mass of poor Egyptians, or Syrians, but we don't want to piss off the entire Arab world, so we tell Israel to go just so far (ok, a little farther than that, just to prove that you're not our lackey), and stretch it out a few years (thirty or forty, even.) We'll keep sending you the money for settlements, and great idea, bringing in all the Soviet block Jews, to balance out whatever leftists remained in the electorate. Just don't too many Lebanons, and please, censor the fucking photos about Gazans dying of hunger in the streets. Just won't fly, over here!

op:

Hopeless nonsense
The paleys are part of the iud process
The israel we have is the israel uncle wants
Possibly
The settler movement
At it's covert core
Is a cia plot

senecal:

While I agree with myself and you, OP, I think we're all being a little too geo-strategical. See, my s.o. believes that Mossad has blackmailable information on every US national politician, and Mossad is also certainly infiltrated, or even run, now, by the Russian mafia. Since their goal is money or drugs pure and simple, and nothing about "eretz Israel", we have to allow that there's a certain vein of rationality in Israel now.
